From Engineered Plans to a Standing Steel Structure
Building a red iron barndominium in the Texas Hill Country is not the same as assembling a bolt-together kit.
At TJ Construction Metalworks, we weld up red iron buildings from engineered plans. That means precision, sequencing, and field experience matter.
If you’re building in San Antonio, Boerne, New Braunfels, or anywhere in the Texas Hill Country, here is what happens once steel hits the job site.

1. Foundation Verification and Anchor Bolt Inspection
Before steel is ever set, we verify the foundation and anchor bolt layout, including:
- Anchor bolt placement
- Bolt projection height
- Slab square and elevation
- Pier depth if required by engineering
In Hill Country builds, rock excavation and elevation changes are common. If anchor bolts are off, everything that follows compounds the error. This step protects the entire structure.
2. Setting Columns
Steel columns are lifted into place and set over anchor bolts. We:
- Confirm columns are plumb in both directions
- Shim as needed
- Temporarily brace each frame before moving to the next
Precision here determines how clean your wall lines and roof lines will be later.
3. Rafter Placement and Frame Assembly
Once columns are secured, rafters are set to create rigid frames. This is where an engineered red iron structure separates itself from lighter systems.
Engineered red iron is built for:
- Large clear spans
- Heavy roof loads
- Strong performance in Texas wind conditions
We follow the engineered plans exactly. No guessing in the field.
4. Welding Structural Connections
This is our specialty.
Many red iron barndominiums in Texas are field-welded for rigidity and long-term performance. We:
- Prep surfaces properly
- Use experienced welders
- Follow the welding details specified in the engineered plans
- Inspect connections before progressing
A proper welding sequence helps prevent frame pull and distortion.
5. Installing Purlins and Girts
Next comes the secondary framing:
- Roof purlins
- Wall girts
- Bracing systems
This ties the structure together and prepares it for roof and wall panels. In the Texas Hill Country, bracing matters. We confirm lateral stability before panels ever go on.
6. Squaring and Final Alignment
Before panels go up, we:
- Measure diagonals
- Confirm the building is square
- Adjust bracing
- Recheck plumb and alignment
If you skip this step, your finished building will show it. A clean, tight shell starts with alignment.
7. Roof and Wall Panels
Once framing is complete and alignment is confirmed:
- Roof panels are installed
- Wall panels follow
- Trim and flashing complete the shell
At this stage, your barndominium is dried in and ready for interior build-out.
Why This Process Matters in the Texas Hill Country
Building in South Texas and the Hill Country can come with real job site challenges, including:
- Rock and caliche soil
- High heat
- Wind exposure
- Expansive clay in some areas
A properly erected red iron structure handles these conditions extremely well, but only if it is built correctly.
Welded Red Iron vs Bolt-Together Kits
A welded system built from engineered plans can offer:
- Increased rigidity
- Long-term structural performance
- Cleaner finished lines
- Better performance under wind load
Not every crew is equipped for this type of work. We specialize in erecting red iron barndominiums from engineered drawings throughout the San Antonio region and the Texas Hill Country.
Planning a Red Iron Barndominium Near San Antonio?
If you are planning a red iron barndominium in San Antonio, Boerne, New Braunfels, Bandera, or anywhere nearby, we would be happy to review your engineered plans and talk through the erection scope.
We are a field crew. We build from engineered drawings. We weld up real red iron structures that last.
